No Return Pass Keep-Away
A 4-on-4 keep-away game with one key rule: you may never pass the ball back to the player who just passed it to you. It forces students to find the third teammate, move after passing, and support the ball in triangles.
How to play
- Set up 3 fields of 15 x 12 m with cones and teams of 4; on the field with 9 students, the extra player is a neutral who always plays with the team that has the ball.
- Play with hand passes, no dribbling, and up to 3 steps. The player with the ball has 3 seconds to pass.
- Main rule: you may not pass back to the teammate who just passed to you. If you do, the ball goes to the other team.
- Every 6 passes in a row without losing the ball earns one point and play continues; the count resets when possession is lost.
- Play 3-minute rounds. Between rounds, the teacher asks what the passer did right after releasing the ball.
- After each round, change opponents by rotating one field. Play 4 rounds and total each team's points.
Rules
- No return passes to the same teammate, not even off a bounce.
- Win the ball only by intercepting, with no contact.
- Pass at chest height and softly when the distance is short.
- The team with the ball counts its passes out loud so everyone can hear.
Variations
Easier
Play 4-on-2 and score a point after 4 passes.
Standard
Play 4-on-4 with a point every 6 passes and no return passes.
Harder
In addition, every pass must go to a teammate who has changed spots since the previous pass.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is a fixed neutral on one side of the field and may receive return passes.
- Autism or shyness: a classmate counts passes out loud and teams stay the same for the whole lesson.
- Fitness level: skilled players must use bounce passes; for less experienced students, enlarge the field.
Learning goals
- Keep possession by finding the open third teammate.
- Move after passing to offer support again.
- Form passing triangles that give the ball carrier two options.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pinnies: 12
- foam ball: 3
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
At first the rule causes many turnovers and some frustration; encourage players to decide where the next pass goes before they catch. The typical mistake is standing still after passing.
