No-Dribble Basketball 4-on-4
A 4-on-4 basketball game where dribbling is banned: the ball moves only by passing. Every player has to get open, offer short support and read open space, and no single student can hog the ball.
How to play
- Make teams of 4 in pinnies. Use two baskets or two half courts; two teams play at each and the rest wait on the sideline as scorekeepers (3 min).
- Explain the key rule: whoever catches the ball must stop and may pivot, but not dribble or walk. They have 4 seconds to pass or shoot.
- Play 4-minute games. Each basket is worth 2 points; if all 4 teammates touched the ball before the basket, it is worth 3.
- If the ball hits the floor, touches an opponent or the 4 seconds run out, possession changes and the ball is inbounded from the sideline.
- Rotate every game: the scorekeeping team comes on and the team that has played longest comes off (4 games, 16 min).
- In the last 5 minutes, allow one dribble per player so students can compare how the game changes.
Rules
- No dribbling or traveling: the pivot foot cannot lift before the ball is released.
- Defend at arm's length from the ball handler without touching their arms.
- In mixed classes, each team has boys and girls on the court, and everyone must receive at least one pass.
- Scorekeepers count the seconds out loud so the rule is enforced without arguments.
Variations
Easier
Give 6 seconds to pass, and the defense may not steal short passes under 2 yards.
Standard
4-on-4 no-dribble with 4 seconds per possession.
Harder
Only bounce or chest passes are allowed, and the team has a 20-second shot clock.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: hold a fixed outlet spot; their passes count like any other and they may shoot at a lowered hoop.
- Students with autism: explain the rule with a visual card and keep them on the same team throughout.
- Lower fitness levels: may sub in and out at any time by swapping with a scorekeeper.
Learning goals
- Get open to create a clear passing lane.
- Keep possession with quick, safe passes.
- Involve every teammate in the offense.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 2
- basketball hoops: 4
- pinnies: 16
- stopwatches: 2
Teacher tip
At first everyone crowds the ball; stop the game and ask each player to take two steps away. Scorekeepers also check whether all 4 players touched the ball.
