No-Dribble 3v1 Rondo: Bounce or Overhead
Trios in a cone triangle pass without dribbling while a defender in the middle tries to intercept. It works choosing the right pass, pivoting and supporting teammates.
How to play
- Trios in a four-meter triangle: bounce passes and overhead passes with no defense (3 min).
- 3v1: one defender in the middle; passers may pivot but not dribble, and five passes in a row score a point (5 min).
- The teacher holds up a card: bounce passes only or overhead passes only (4 min).
- 3v2 in a bigger space, and attackers can move freely (3 min).
Rules
- The defender switches after each interception or every thirty seconds.
- Passes at chest height or off the floor, never at someone's face.
- The defender can't touch the passer, only intercept.
- Attackers stay inside the marked triangle.
Variations
Easier
A five-meter triangle, and the defender may only walk.
Standard
A four-meter triangle with an active defender.
Harder
A three-meter triangle with required alternating bounce and overhead passes.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: use a sound ball, and the receiver calls their name before each pass.
- Wheelchair users: act as a fixed passer at a corner; the defender must stay at least an arm's length away.
- Students unsure about catching: start with a soft rubber ball.
Learning goals
- Choose the type of pass based on the defender's position.
- Use the pivot to open passing lanes.
- Work together to keep possession.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 10
- cones: 30
- pinnies: 10
Teacher tip
Set out the cone triangles before class. The usual mistake is a weak overhead pass, so ask for two hands and full arm extension.
