Nine-Cone Grid Memory Sprints
A partner flashes a card with a number sequence for five seconds, and the runner memorizes it to touch the numbered cones of a 3 x 3 grid in order as fast as possible. The activity blends agility, direction changes and working memory.
How to play
- Set up 6 grids of 3 x 3 cones spaced 3 yards apart and number each cone 1 to 9 with a card under it. Put 4 students at each grid, working in two pairs (3 min).
- Each pair gets sequence cards: green cards have 3 numbers, yellow 4 and red 5. The runner starts at a spot 2 yards from cone 2.
- The partner shows the card for 5 seconds and hides it; the runner goes, touches the cones in that order and returns to the start. The partner checks the order and times it.
- A correct sequence scores 1 point; correct and under 10 seconds scores 2. The two pairs in each group alternate so everyone gets rest (5 min).
- After two correct cards in a row, move up a color. Switch roles every 4 tries (5 min).
- Final challenge: the runner creates a 5-cone sequence for their partner but must run it cleanly first (3 min).
Rules
- Touch each cone with your hand; touching the wrong one cancels the try.
- The card is shown for only 5 seconds.
- Safety: keep at least 4 yards between grids and only one runner per grid at a time.
- Walk back to the start after every try.
Variations
Easier
Use sequences of 2 or 3 cones and 8 seconds to memorize.
Standard
Color-coded cards from 3 to 5 cones with 5 seconds to memorize.
Harder
The partner calls the sequence out loud once and the runner does it in reverse order.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: space cones 4 yards apart and touch with a hand or a pool noodle from the wheelchair.
- Autism or shyness: practice first with the card in view and choose a partner.
- Lower fitness: speed walk the course while keeping the memory challenge.
Learning goals
- Change direction quickly along different paths.
- Remember and perform movement sequences under time pressure.
- Check and score a partner's work honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 54
- cards: 90
Teacher tip
Make the cards before class and laminate them to reuse. Some students remember well but stop dead at every cone, so ask them to plan the route before they go.
