News in the Body: Telling a Headline Without Words
Each group receives a real, recent news story and tells it with the body in three tableaux and two transitions, without words: before, the event and the aftermath. The audience must rebuild the headline, which forces students to boil down the information and choose the clearest gestures.
How to play
- The teacher hands each group of five a card with a short news story (sports, science, environment, culture) and students read it silently (3 min).
- Each group sums up the story in a ten-word sentence and decides which three moments to show (5 min).
- Create three frozen tableaux and the two moving transitions between them, 90 seconds maximum (10 min).
- Performance: after each piece, the audience writes the headline they understood in ten words and compares it with the original (9 min).
- Short discussion: which gestures were most effective, and what information is impossible to tell with the body alone (3 min).
Rules
- Choose stories that do not cover recent tragedies close to the students and are not offensive to any group.
- No words, signs or written numbers; sounds are allowed.
- Conflict scenes are played in slow motion with no rough contact.
- Keep to the time limit: the timekeeper calls out at 80 seconds.
Variations
Easier
Very visual stories (a sports record, an animal rescue) and only two tableaux.
Standard
Three tableaux with two transitions and a headline rebuilt by the audience.
Harder
Each group picks the story from an online newspaper and tells it from two different points of view.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: can read the story and help the group with the visual clarity of gestures, a particular strength.
- Dyslexia: gets the story in large print and summarized, or a classmate reads it aloud.
- Limited mobility: takes a central or raised seated position in the tableaux, and transitions are designed around their movement.
Learning goals
- Boil down complex information and convey it through body language.
- Use tableaux and transitions as a narrative structure.
- Reflect on the limits and possibilities of nonverbal communication.
Equipment for a class of 25
