Neutral Mask: Awakening and the Journey Through the Elements
With a neutral mask hiding facial expression, the whole message moves to the body. Students do the classic awakening exercise (discovering the world for the first time) and a journey through water, fire, air and earth, aiming for economical movement without tics or personal gestures.
How to play
- Introduce the mask: hold it by the edges, put it on with your back to the audience and turn around already “neutral”; explain that nobody speaks under the mask (4 min).
- Without masks, everyone lying on mats: the awakening, opening the eyes, sitting up and discovering the space as if for the first time (5 min).
- In turns of five with masks, repeat the awakening in front of the group, which watches for personal gestures creeping in (6 min).
- Journey of the elements: with masks, cross the room through a river, a burning forest, a strong wind and muddy ground, guided by the teacher's voice (6 min).
- Circle: which body parts spoke loudest without the face, and which personal gestures each student noticed in themselves (4 min).
Rules
- Touch the mask only by the edges and always leave it face up on the table.
- With the mask on, walk slowly in a clear space, since side vision is reduced.
- No talking or laughing under the mask; anyone who needs to stop takes it off facing away.
- Wipe each mask clean before passing it to someone else.
Variations
Easier
Work entirely without masks, with the cue of a relaxed, expressionless face.
Standard
Awakening and journey through the elements with masks and group observation.
Harder
Solo journey with no verbal guide: the student chooses the order of the elements and the group must identify them.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: works without a mask, eyes half-closed, with a partner watching the space.
- Anxiety or claustrophobia: wears the mask for only a few seconds or works with a neutral face without it.
- Limited mobility: the awakening is done from the wheelchair and the journey is adapted to moving in it.
Learning goals
- Develop stage presence and economy of movement.
- Express sensations and states with the body without relying on the face.
- Identify one's own unnecessary gestures and expressive tics.
Equipment for a class of 25
- masks: 15
- yoga mats: 30
Teacher tip
Neutral masks can be made in an earlier session from white card stock and elastic. Fifteen are enough to work in turns.
