Net Joust Battles
Two players on opposite sides of the net push on a ball held right above it at the same time, trying to force it into the other court, just like a joust at the net in a real game. Students build arm and finger strength, vertical jumping, and fair play at the net.
How to play
- Pairs face off across a low net (about 7 feet), with pairs spaced 10 feet apart along the net (2 min).
- A third student holds the ball above the net; both players place their hands on it without jumping. On 'Go!', they push.
- The point goes to whoever forces the ball down on the other side. Play sets of 5 jousts (4 min).
- Jumping phase (5 min): the third student tosses the ball softly above the net and both jump to fight for it with two hands.
- Rotate every set: the winner moves to the pair on the left, and the holder steps in to play. Finish with wrist stretches (1 min).
Rules
- Push only on the ball; never touch the net or your opponent.
- When landing, stay on your own side without crossing the center line.
- If a joust is unclear, replay it without arguing.
Variations
Easier
No jump and a soft ball, pushing from a standing position.
Standard
Jumping joust on a soft toss above the net.
Harder
After winning the joust, block a controlled attack from the student who was holding.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated joust with a low rope as the net and a soft ball.
- Shyness: pair students of similar level and skip any public ranking.
- Less strength: pair students of similar strength and use a soft ball.
Learning goals
- Apply arm and finger strength to the ball above the net.
- Time the vertical jump to the ball.
- Respect the rules about net and opponent contact.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 8
- low net: 2
Teacher tip
Watch for students grabbing the net or landing on the other side: that is when ankle injuries happen. Pair students by height and strength.
