Neck, Shoulder, and Scalp Self-Massage
A guided seated self-massage sequence using the hands that moves through the scalp, temples, base of the skull, upper traps, and shoulders with pressure, circles, and kneading. It releases tension from exercise and long hours of studying.
How to play
- Sitting tall, rub the palms together for 10 seconds; with the fingertips, make small circles over the scalp from forehead to neck (1 min).
- Slow two-finger circles on the temples and jaw joint, mouth slightly open (1 min).
- Fingers laced behind the head, press the thumbs into the base of the skull and slide outward (1 min).
- Knead the opposite upper trap like squeezing a sponge, 45 seconds per side, breathing slowly (2 min).
- Five slow backward shoulder rolls, then let the shoulders drop with a long exhale (2 min).
Rules
- Firm but comfortable pressure: it should never hurt.
- Never press on the front of the neck.
- Stay quiet so everyone can focus on how their body feels.
Variations
Easier
Do only the scalp and upper traps, 1 minute per area.
Standard
Follow the full five-area sequence.
Harder
Each student designs a three-area order and quietly talks a partner through it while the partner does it on themselves.
Adaptations
- Limited arm mobility: use the more mobile hand and rest the elbow on a desk.
- Visual impairment: describe each move in detail and guide the student's hand to feel the right pressure.
- Autism or anxiety: eyes open, and announce each change of area before it happens.
Learning goals
- Apply basic self-massage to the head, neck, and shoulders.
- Connect stress and study posture with neck tension.
- Have a short relaxation routine that works anywhere.
Teacher tip
Demonstrate each move facing the class and then with your back to them so they copy the correct hand. It works great during test weeks or after shoulder-heavy lessons.
