Muiñeira: Galician Footwork in 6/8 with Tambourines
The muiñeira is Galicia's signature dance, played on bagpipes and tambourine in 6/8 time that feels like two groups of three. It is danced in pairs or facing groups with nimble footwork and raised arms.
How to play
- Background and beat: clap the 6/8, strong on counts one and four, while a few tambourines play along (4 min).
- Basic footwork in place: toe forward, switch feet with a hop and back, in two groups of three (5 min).
- Arms up and traveling: advance and retire with the footwork, facing another line (5 min).
- In pairs: swap places, turn in place and nod hello (5 min).
- Groups of six create a short four-figure muiñeira with two of them on tambourine (6 min).
Rules
- Light hops on the toes with loose knees.
- Play tambourines with your hand or fingers at a moderate volume.
- Pairs can be any combination.
- When swapping, pass left shoulder to left shoulder so nobody bumps.
Variations
Easier
No hop: toe, switch and back while walking.
Standard
Footwork with hop, arms and partner figures.
Harder
Add a full turn on each swap without losing the beat.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: watch the tambourine and rest a palm on the drumhead to feel the vibration.
- Students with limited mobility: play tambourine for the group and trace the figures in the wheelchair.
- Ankle injury: arms and tambourine, adding footwork only if it feels fine.
Learning goals
- Feel and dance a 6/8 meter.
- Coordinate footwork, arms and partner figures.
- Learn about traditional Galician dance and its instruments.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tambourines: 6
- speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Ask whether anyone plays tambourine or bagpipes: they can play live. Common mistake: switching feet on every count; the switch lands on counts one and four.
