Moving Desks and Chairs Safely with a Partner
Guided practice for moving classroom desks and chairs with a partner using safe technique: get close to the load, bend hips and knees, coordinate with your voice, and turn with your feet. It builds posture habits, back injury prevention, and communication.
How to play
- No load: 10 hip hinges and 10 squats in front of a chair, with a neutral back and weight in the heels (2 min).
- Single chair: lift it close to the body, carry it 10 m, and set it down turning with the feet, not the waist. Three trips (3 min).
- Partner desk carry: call "three, two, one, lift," lift together, and carry 10 m; whoever walks backward takes short steps while the partner warns of obstacles (3 min).
- Course: through the door, around a corner, and set the desk on a marked spot without dragging. Waiting pairs give one tip (4 min).
- Final challenge: set the room in a U shape in under 2 minutes with proper form; add 5 seconds for every drag or rounded back (3 min).
Rules
- Nobody lifts a desk alone.
- Call out before lifting and lowering.
- Safety: empty desks, backpacks out of the way, and fingers clear when setting down.
Variations
Easier
Single chair and straight-line desk carry only.
Standard
Chair, partner desk, door-and-corner course, and the U challenge.
Harder
The U challenge is done silently with agreed hand signals.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: coordinates the final challenge, calls signals, and checks technique.
- Visual impairment: carries the forward-facing end with a partner describing the route.
- Fitness level: pair students of similar strength; those with less start with chairs.
Learning goals
- Apply safe lifting and carrying technique.
- Coordinate with a partner using clear signals.
- Transfer posture habits to everyday tasks.
Equipment for a class of 25
- classroom desks: 12
- chairs: 25
Teacher tip
Use any real room setup change as practice. The most common mistake is twisting at the waist with the load: keep cueing students to move their feet.
