Move While It Rings
The triangle makes long sounds and the tambourine makes short ones. While the long sound lasts, kids float around like butterflies; with a short sound, they make one jump. They learn to hear how long a sound lasts and to control their movement.
How to play
- Everyone sits quietly. Strike the triangle and say: “Listen until it ends.” Raise hands when you can't hear it anymore. Then give one tap on the tambourine: “This one is short” (2 min).
- Standing and spread out. With the triangle, kids move like butterflies, with soft arms, for as long as the sound lasts. When it fades, they freeze (3 min).
- With one tap of the tambourine, one jump and freeze. Switch between triangle and tambourine without warning (3 min).
- Change the long-sound movement: spin slowly, tiptoe, slowly grow big. The short sound is always one jump (2 min).
- To finish, make a long sound with your voice, “aaaah,” and the group stretches while it lasts; then each child makes their own long sound and moves with it (2 min).
Rules
- Listen all the way to the end of the sound.
- When it's quiet, freeze.
- Butterflies fly without bumping.
- Just one jump, in place.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, only the long triangle sound and freezing at the end.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, switch between long and short sounds.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, two short taps for two jumps, or a long sound followed by a short one.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: move the arms during the long sound and clap on the short one.
- Hearing: let the child touch the triangle to feel the vibration, or lower your arm when the sound ends.
- Skill level or shyness: a willing child can play the triangle; easily distracted kids stand next to you.
Learning goals
- Tell long and short sounds apart.
- Match how long they move to how long the sound lasts.
- Control the body to hold still in silence.
Equipment for a class of 25
- triangle: 1
- tambourine: 1
Teacher tip
Ask for real silence before each sound: it's the magic of the game. Strike the triangle gently so it rings a long time.
