Monkey in the Middle Soccer Rondo 4v1
A keep-away game in which four players pass the ball with their feet inside a cone square while one defender tries to intercept it. Students practice inside-of-the-foot passing, supporting the player on the ball, and reading open space.
How to play
- Make groups of 5 and set up an 8 x 8 yard square for each group: four players stand one on each side and one goes in the middle wearing a pinnie as the defender.
- Attackers pass with the inside of the foot and may only move along their own side of the square to offer a clean passing lane.
- If the defender touches the ball or it leaves the square, the defender switches places with the last attacker who touched it.
- Count consecutive passes out loud: every 6 in a row earns the attackers a point, and every steal earns the defender a point.
- Play 3 rounds of 3 minutes with a 1-minute break to fix technique and remind players to slide to the side of the teammate with the ball.
- In the last round, require two touches: one to receive, one to pass.
Rules
- The defender plays the ball only: no pushing and no studs-up tackles.
- No one holds the ball for more than 3 seconds.
- Passes stay on the ground, below the knee, so no one gets hit in the face.
- A defender who goes 1 minute without a steal automatically switches with a teammate.
Variations
Easier
Play in a 10 x 10 yard square and let players stop the ball with the sole before passing.
Standard
Use an 8 x 8 yard square with unlimited touches and a point for every 6 passes in a row.
Harder
Move to 5v2 in a 10 x 10 yard square with a two-touch limit for every player.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student holds one fixed side and receives with the hands or a larger ball; the defender cannot pressure within 3 feet.
- Autism or shyness: the student always starts as an attacker in a consistent group and gets a heads-up signal before taking a turn on defense.
- Skill level: group students by ability and enlarge or shrink the square; advanced players are limited to one touch.
Learning goals
- Pass accurately with the inside of the foot to a nearby teammate.
- Move along their side to open up a clear passing lane.
- Respect role changes and the group's pass count.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 6
- cones: 20
- pinnies: 5
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is standing still in the corner: coach the support players to shift away from the defender. Set the squares up before class so no time is lost.
