Mock Study Session with Movement Breaks
A simulated study afternoon alternating short focus tasks with seated or movement breaks, so students can compare performance and fatigue. It builds study planning and shows movement as a health tool.
How to play
- Each student gets three worksheets of short tasks at similar difficulty (chained addition, spot the difference, unscramble words). You'll measure how many items they solve in 4 minutes (2 min).
- Block 1: 4 minutes of silent work, then a 2-minute seated, phone-free break.
- Block 2: 4 minutes of work, then a 3-minute guided movement break: 30 seconds each of squats, high knees, trunk rotations, and chest openers, plus 1 minute of easy jumping jacks.
- Block 3: 4 minutes of work, then a 3-minute break designed by partners using moves that fit in a bedroom.
- After each block, students record items solved and mental fatigue from 1 to 5.
- Debrief (3 min): did performance improve after moving? Draft a schedule with 25-45 minute blocks and 3-5 minute movement breaks.
Rules
- Work blocks are silent and phone-free.
- Breaks last the full time.
- Safety: before movement breaks, clear backpacks and leave space between desks.
Variations
Easier
Two blocks: one with a seated break, one with a movement break.
Standard
Three 4-minute blocks with seated, guided, and partner-designed breaks.
Harder
Add a fourth block after 8 straight minutes to see built-up fatigue.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated movement break with arm, trunk, and neck mobility.
- Autism or attention needs: fewer items per sheet and a visible clock.
- Fitness level: every exercise has an easy and a harder version.
Learning goals
- Test how movement breaks affect focus.
- Design a short movement break for home.
- Plan a study afternoon that includes movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- worksheets: 75
- pens: 25
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
One class isn't conclusive, so encourage students to repeat the experiment at home for a week. Worksheets must be similar in difficulty to compare fairly.
