Mitt Work by the Numbers: Called Combos
In pairs, one student holds focus mitts and calls combos using the boxing number system (1 to 6) while the partner punches the mitts with no body contact. Students build punching technique, coordination, endurance and clear communication with a partner.
How to play
- Teach the code: 1 jab, 2 cross, 3 lead hook, 4 rear hook, 5 lead uppercut, 6 rear uppercut (4 min).
- Pair students of similar height; the holder keeps the mitts at shoulder height, elbows bent, palms facing the puncher.
- Round 1 (2 min): the holder calls only 1, 2 and 1-2; the puncher returns to guard after every punch, then partners switch roles.
- Rounds 2 and 3 (2 min each per person): add three-punch combos such as 1-2-3 or 1-6-3-2, always at about 60% power.
- Round 4 (2 min per person): the holder moves the mitts and travels; the puncher follows with short steps and never crosses the feet.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each pair shares the hardest combo and why, and checks each other's guard position.
Rules
- Punch the mitts only, never the holder's body or face.
- Punch at 60-70% power with a tight fist and a straight wrist.
- The holder does not push the mitt into the punch; absorb it with a bent elbow.
- On the whistle, everyone stops and drops their hands.
Variations
Easier
Use only punches 1 and 2 and keep the mitts still.
Standard
Call two- to four-punch combos in two-minute rounds.
Harder
The holder adds a "duck" call so the puncher slips under before finishing the combo.
Adaptations
- For limited mobility, punch from a seated position using only straight punches while the holder adjusts mitt height.
- For students with autism, post the number code on a card and keep the same partner for the whole lesson.
- For lower fitness levels, shorten rounds to 90 seconds with 60 seconds of rest.
Learning goals
- Perform the six basic punches with safe technique.
- Link punch combinations from a verbal cue.
- Control punching force to keep a partner safe.
Equipment for a class of 25
- focus mitts (pairs): 13
- foam gloves (pairs): 13
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is dropping the non-punching hand, so cue students to bring it back to the cheek every time. Watch for bent wrists and for anyone locking the elbow at full extension.
