Mirror Me Tabata: Lead and Follow
A partner Tabata where, each round, a leader picks and combines exercises from a menu and the partner mirrors them at the same tempo. Students build bodyweight strength and endurance and learn to put together a balanced workout for both of them.
How to play
- Partners face each other with two yoga mats. The board shows a 10-exercise menu: squat, lunge, push-up, plank, mountain climbers, glute bridge, jumping jacks, high knees, side plank, and squat hold (2 min).
- Odd rounds: A leads and may link one or two menu exercises during the 20 seconds; B copies like a mirror with no delay.
- Even rounds: B leads. Nobody may repeat the exercise their partner just picked.
- Block 1: 8 rounds of 20 seconds on and 10 seconds off (4 min), signaled by whistle.
- 3-minute break: each pair talks about which muscle groups they worked and writes down the 4 exercises that worked best.
- Block 2: an 8-round Tabata using only those 4 exercises in an order they agree on, now both in sync with no leader (4 min).
Rules
- The leader must choose exercises the partner can do well; if the partner can't, drop the level.
- No more than two exercises per round.
- Safety: 6 ft between pairs and hands on the mat for push-ups and planks.
Variations
Easier
Cut the menu to 6 simple exercises and one exercise per round.
Standard
A 10-exercise menu with up to two per round and a second block designed by the pair.
Harder
The leader switches exercises without warning and the partner must react in under a second.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a menu of seated or supported standing exercises; the partner mirrors the same version.
- Autism: the menu is on picture cards and the student points to a card before each round.
- Different fitness levels: each partner copies the movement but in their own version (knees down, no jump).
Learning goals
- Combine bodyweight exercises to work different muscle groups.
- Design a balanced Tabata block with a partner.
- Adjust choices to a partner's ability level.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
- whistle: 1
Teacher tip
Many leaders keep picking what is easiest for them, so require every block to include legs, upper body, and core.
