Mirror Me Rescue Tag
A rescue tag game with a creative twist: tagged players freeze in a made-up pose, and a classmate frees them by standing in front, copying the pose like a mirror, and counting to three together. Students practice dodging, balance, and body creativity.
How to play
- Mark a 20 x 20 m area. Pick 3 taggers in pinnies; everyone else spreads out (1 min).
- On the whistle, taggers chase. A tagged player freezes in an original pose: on one foot, arms out wide, crouched, on tiptoes, and so on.
- To free them, a classmate stands in front, copies the pose like a mirror, and both count out loud to three.
- During those three seconds the pair is safe. When they finish, both run off in different directions.
- Each round lasts 2.5 minutes. At the end, switch taggers and ask one frozen player to show their best pose.
- Play 4 rounds; for each one, the teacher picks a pose theme: animals, statues, letters, or sports.
Rules
- Tag gently and never on the face.
- Frozen poses must be safe: no head on the ground and no risky balances.
- The copy has to really match; if not, the frozen player stays frozen.
- You may not rescue the same person twice in a row.
Variations
Easier
Poses keep both feet on the ground and rescuers only need to copy the arms.
Standard
Free pose, full mirror copy, and a count to three.
Harder
The pose must be held balancing on one foot and the copy lasts five seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student freezes with an arm-and-face pose, and classmates copy only the upper body.
- Visual impairment: the frozen player describes their pose out loud ("right arm up") so the rescuer can copy it.
- Shy students: they can pick poses from an illustrated card instead of inventing them.
Learning goals
- Dodge taggers with changes of direction.
- Copy poses accurately and with balance.
- Create original body shapes.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
At first many students copy without really looking; do an exaggerated demo with one student. Pose themes keep kids from repeating the same shapes.
