Mime Basics: Invisible Wall and Objects
Students learn basic mime techniques such as the fixed point, the invisible wall, and the weight of imaginary objects, then use them in a short wordless scene. Students work on gesture precision, focus, and nonverbal communication.
How to play
- In place, spend 4 minutes teaching the fixed point: the hand stays "stuck" in the air while the body moves. Everyone tries it with one and both hands.
- The wall (4 minutes): in pairs facing each other, one touches an invisible wall with flat hands that stick and release; the partner says whether the wall is "visible."
- Weight (4 minutes): each student lifts imaginary objects of different weights (a feather, a suitcase, a couch) and the class guesses what it is from the effort.
- In pairs, prepare a 40-second scene with a wall, one heavy object, and one light object; for example, the pair gets trapped in a box (5 minutes).
- Five pairs perform at once around the room; then switch until all have performed (4 minutes).
- 1-minute discussion: which scene was easiest to understand and why?
Rules
- Scenes are done with no voice or sounds.
- Imaginary objects keep the same size and shape throughout the scene.
- Watch respectfully: the audience doesn't call out corrections during a scene.
- Keep movements controlled; no pushing your partner.
Variations
Easier
Work only on the wall and one object in 20-second solo scenes.
Standard
A partner scene with a wall, a heavy object, and a light object.
Harder
Groups of 4 with one shared imaginary object that everyone must keep the same size.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: mime with hands and torso from a chair, which works very well for the fixed point and the wall.
- Hearing impairment: an ideal activity since it uses no words; explain with visual demos.
- Advanced students: add a movement illusion such as walking against the wind.
Learning goals
- Use the fixed-point technique to create imaginary objects and surfaces.
- Show weight and size through muscle tension.
- Tell a short story using only the body.
Teacher tip
The typical mistake is hands going through the wall or objects changing size. Pause the class so students freeze the image and check it.
