Mid-Run Cramp: Stop, Stretch, Return
Pairs run intervals and, on the signal, one partner 'gets' a cramp in the muscle shown on the card while the other applies the gentle stretch that relieves it. It builds endurance and teaches a simple, very common first aid skill in sports.
How to play
- Easy jog and explanation: a cramp is an involuntary, painful contraction; stop, gently stretch the muscle and massage it (3 min).
- Demo by muscle: calf (pull the toes toward the knee), hamstrings (straight leg gently raised) and quads (heel toward the glutes) (4 min).
- Intervals: one minute running in pairs around the cones; on the whistle the teacher shows a card and the pair applies that stretch (8 min).
- A round where the 'injured' partner coaches with words: 'gentler', 'that's it' (3 min).
- Water break and review: when a cramp that won't ease or keeps coming back needs a doctor (2 min).
Rules
- Assisted stretching is always slow and stops at the first complaint.
- Stretch lying on the ground or a mat, out of other runners' way.
- Water is available and breaks are fine whenever anyone asks.
- No hitting or pinching the muscle.
Variations
Easier
Just one muscle (calf) and running at a jog.
Standard
Three muscles and running at a medium pace.
Harder
Harder intervals, and the pair figures out the muscle from what the 'injured' partner describes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the intervals in the wheelchair and give or receive forearm and hand stretches.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the switch is signaled by holding up the card and raising an arm.
- Students who prefer no contact: learn the self-stretch version for each muscle.
Learning goals
- Sustain medium-to-high intensity running intervals.
- Relieve a cramp with a gentle stretch.
- Know ways to reduce cramps: hydration, warming up and pacing effort.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 12
- muscle cards: 3
- water bottles: 4
Teacher tip
The causes of cramps aren't fully understood and muscle fatigue plays a big role, so don't promise that water always prevents them. Common mistake: stretching suddenly; ask for slow, held movements.
