Memory Run: Pairs Hidden Under the Cones
A long-duration relay where teams run to a field of cones, lift two and look for matching picture cards. It builds intermittent endurance with memory and teamwork.

How to play
- Under 24 cones there are 12 pairs of cards with sports pictures. Four teams line up 20 m from the cone field (3 min).
- One runner per team goes, lifts two cones: if they match, they carry the pair back; if not, they cover them again and run back. They tag the next teammate's hand (7 min).
- One-minute walking break: the team quietly shares what they remember (1 min).
- Second game with the cards shuffled and a longer route out, rounding a cone at 10 m (7 min).
- Team-of-teams count: add up all the pairs in the class and check none are missing (2 min).
Rules
- Lift only two cones per trip and put them back the same way.
- Students in line don't shout locations: talk only within your team when the runner returns.
- Go on the hand tag, not before.
- Look ahead when running: several teams share the cone field.
Variations
Easier
Fewer pairs (8) and the field at 12 m.
Standard
Twelve pairs and the field at 20 m.
Harder
Pairs are term-definition (for example, "pulse" and "beats per minute") and you must read before taking them.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: tactile cards (different textures) and runs with a guide.
- Wheelchair users: cones go on a table or bench so they can lift them without bending down.
- Students with memory difficulties: may ask their team for a hint before going.
Learning goals
- Keep up intermittent running for 15 minutes.
- Use memory and team communication.
- Respect the start rules and shared space.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 24
- picture cards: 24
- pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
Set the cones in a neat grid so they're easier to remember. To avoid collisions, each team enters the field from a different side.
