Match Heat Map: Using Space in 5-a-Side Soccer
While two teams play 5-a-side soccer, the other two film from a high vantage point and build a heat map by marking which zone each player is in every 10 seconds. With the map, each team picks a tactical adjustment and tests it in a rematch.
How to play
- Split each field into 12 zones with cones (4 lengthwise, 3 across) visible from the filming spot; form four teams of seven, with five on the field and two rotating subs (5 min).
- Team A plays Team B for 7 minutes; Teams C and D film with a fixed tablet, each following one team (7 min).
- Switch: C plays D for 7 minutes, and A and B film (7 min).
- Analysis: pause the video every 10 seconds and put a mark on the worksheet grid for each player of the team you're watching in each zone; the result is their heat map (8 min).
- Each team gets its map, chooses an adjustment (spread out, stagger, press higher) and plays a 4-minute rematch (8 min).
Rules
- No tackles from behind and no hard charging.
- Film from the bleachers or another safe spot; no climbing walls or fences.
- Subs rotate every 2 minutes so everyone plays.
- Videos are used only for class analysis.
Variations
Easier
A 6-zone grid and a pause every 20 seconds.
Standard
A 12-zone grid, a pause every 10 seconds and a rematch with one adjustment.
Harder
Make separate maps for attacking and defending phases.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: acts as lead analyst and coach who passes on the adjustment, or plays with a personal zone where the ball can't be challenged.
- Autism: has a clearly defined task, like counting marks for one half of the field.
- Low fitness level: rotates in every 2 minutes and defends a fixed zone.
Learning goals
- Analyze a team's use of space with video data.
- Make tactical decisions based on observation.
- Apply the principles of width and depth in play.

Teacher tip
A second-floor window or the top of the bleachers gives the best view. If there's no high spot, film from behind a goal and use a 6-zone grid.
