Mass Opening Warm-Up for Sports Day
The class creates and rehearses the music warm-up routine that will open the school sports day, designed so that hundreds of people of all ages can follow it from a stage. Students work on clear movements, progression and leading from a platform or raised spot.
How to play
- Pick a song of about 3 minutes with the class and split the routine into four blocks of 4 x 8 counts: mobility, moving in place, coordination and final activation (3 min).
- Four groups each create one block with big, symmetrical moves that are easy to copy from far away (8 min).
- Each group teaches its block to the whole class standing in rows, as if they were the audience (8 min).
- Full rehearsal: four leaders lead from the front and the rest follow from 15 m away; record from the back with a tablet (5 min).
- Watch the video and fix moves that cannot be seen or understood from a distance (4 min).
- Final run-through with the full song (2 min).
Rules
- No moves include one-legged jumps or fast spins, so all ages can do it.
- Each block has a no-travel version for those who cannot move around.
- Leaders exaggerate their gestures and face the audience, not their classmates.
- Keep one meter between rows to avoid bumping into each other.
Variations
Easier
Two blocks repeated twice with a slower song.
Standard
Four blocks of four musical phrases with leaders and a video check.
Harder
Add a canon by rows and a full seated version for people with limited mobility.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: designs and leads the seated version that will run in parallel on the day.
- Hearing impairment: block changes are signaled with a big gesture from the leader as well as the music.
- Shyness or anxiety: joins the creating group and follows from the rows instead of leading.
Learning goals
- Create a movement composition set to music for a diverse audience.
- Lead a large group with clear gestures and nonverbal communication.
- Prepare a progressive, safe warm-up for an event.

Teacher tip
