Masking Tape Floor Agility Course
A five-station circuit taped on the floor for rainy days: an agility ladder, a zigzag, a quick-feet square, a balance line, and a numbered grid. Students build agility, footwork, and balance without any large equipment.
How to play
- Before class, tape 5 stations: an 8-square ladder with 16-in squares, a 13-ft zigzag, a 2-ft square split into four, a 13-ft straight line, and a 3 x 3 grid numbered 1 to 9, each with a task card. Make 5 groups of 5 and give a quick demo (3 min).
- Ladder: one foot per square, then two feet, then sideways. Zigzag: two-foot jumps side to side over the line.
- Square: two-foot jumps following the card's sequence. Line: tightrope walk forward and backward. Grid: a partner calls 3 numbers and the student jumps to those squares in order; then 4 and 5.
- Each group spends 3 minutes per station, one at a time, starting when the student ahead is halfway. Rotate on the whistle (15 min).
- Wrap-up: each group invents a new challenge at its last station and shows it (2 min).
Rules
- Start when the student ahead is halfway.
- Wear tied sneakers or go barefoot, never socks only.
- At the grid, wait outside until you hear the numbers.
Variations
Easier
Bigger squares, walking only, and 2-number sequences.
Standard
Jumping courses and 3- to 5-number sequences.
Harder
Two stations back to back against the clock, or everything on one foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: follow the lines in a wheelchair or touch the squares by hand from outside.
- Visual impairment: high-contrast or double-layer tape for texture, and a partner claps the rhythm.
- Fitness: each card shows three levels (walk, two feet, one foot) and students choose.
Learning goals
- Improve footwork and agility.
- Keep balance along straight-line courses.
- Memorize sequences while jumping.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Rolls of masking tape: 3
- Task cards: 5
Teacher tip
Use a different color of painter's tape for each station so students can find their way. If you can, leave the course down for warm-ups on other rainy days.
