Many Ways Across the Bench
Kids cross low gym benches in many ways: walking, crawling, sideways, sitting, or lying on their tummy. They practice balance at a low height, explore their own movement, and build confidence, always with mats around.
How to play
- Set up 3 benches spread apart, with mats on both sides and at the end of each. Next to each bench, lay two straight ropes on the floor for kids who are waiting. Demonstrate first.
- Split the class into three groups, one per bench. While one child crosses the bench, the others cross the floor ropes copying the same movement. Nobody stands around waiting.
- First way: "crawl across like kittens." Each child crosses several times. 2 minutes.
- Tap the tambourine or clap to switch: "walk standing with arms out," "sideways like crabs," "sitting and scooting with your hands." About 2 minutes each. 8 minutes.
- Free choice: "Invent your own way across." Each child picks one, and you name it out loud so others can copy. 3 minutes.
- Finish move: at the end of the bench, step down onto the mat, no jumping, and freeze like a statue. 2 minutes.
Rules
- One child on the bench at a time; the next one starts when the last one steps off.
- Step down onto the mat; never jump off backward.
- No passing anyone on the bench.
- The teacher always stands next to the bench.
Variations
Easier
Only crawl or scoot sitting, holding the teacher's hand.
Standard
Crawl, walk standing, and go sideways with arms out.
Harder
Walk backward standing, or step over a beanbag placed in the middle.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: slide on the tummy along the bench with help, or cross a wide line on the floor.
- Autism or low vision: preview each way with a picture card, or have the adult guide the first step by hand.
- More skilled kids invent a new way; kids who need support have an adult or buddy holding their hand.
Learning goals
- Keep balance in different positions on a narrow, low surface.
- Explore different ways of moving.
- Build confidence crossing without fear.
Equipment for a class of 25
- gym benches: 3
- mats: 9
- ropes: 6
Teacher tip
Stand at the bench with the youngest kids and keep the others in view. Benches are steadier on the bare floor, never on top of mats.
