Magic Stepping Stones Swamp Crossing

Each group must cross a 12-yard swamp stepping only inside a few hoops, which disappear if nobody is touching them. This team challenge requires planning, communicating, balancing together, and making sure the whole group makes it across.

How to play

  1. Use cones to mark two riverbanks 12 yards apart and make groups of 6. Each group gets 4 hoops, the magic stepping stones, and lines up behind the starting bank.
  2. Explain the challenge: the whole group must reach the other bank stepping only inside hoops. Hoops can be moved forward, but if a hoop is left with nobody touching it, the alligator (the teacher) takes it away.
  3. If anyone steps outside a hoop, the whole group returns to the start with whatever hoops it still has. Allow 1 minute of planning before each attempt.
  4. First attempt (6 min). Groups that make it record their time and cross again with one fewer hoop.
  5. Second attempt (6 min): each group chooses one member who may not talk during the crossing, so the others learn to communicate another way.
  6. Wrap-up (4 min): each group explains its strategy and shares a moment when someone kept another person from falling.

Rules

Variations

Easier

Give the group one hoop fewer than the number of players and shorten the swamp to 8 yards.

Standard

Four hoops for six players over a 12-yard swamp.

Harder

Only three hoops, and the group also carries a ball that may not touch the ground.

Adaptations

Learning goals

Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip

Use large hoops on a non-slip surface and play up the alligator role so the challenge stays fun. Groups often forget the last person, so ask who is looking out for them.
