Low-Impact Hiking with Environmental Analysis
An easy hike around the school area with stops to observe and record plants, wildlife, terrain and human impact. Students get physical activity outdoors and build environmental awareness.
How to play
- Before leaving, explain the route and the 4 observation stops, and make groups of 4–5 with one field notebook and one recorder (3 min).
- Walk at an easy pace to the first stop; the teacher leads and another adult or a responsible student brings up the rear.
- At each stop (about 3 min), the group records one plant, one animal sign, what the terrain is like and one human impact (litter, trails, buildings).
- Between stops, observation challenges: count the different birds you can hear or notice which direction the sun is.
- Back at school, each group picks its most interesting observation and shares it in 1 minute (6 min).
Rules
- The group stays together; nobody passes the teacher or falls behind the last adult.
- Don't pick plants or disturb animals.
- Pack out all your own trash.
- Proper footwear and water for everyone.
Variations
Easier
Short route with two stops and picture cards to check off.
Standard
Route with four observation stops and a debrief.
Harder
Each group proposes one improvement to reduce human impact on the area.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: accessible route on a paved path or wide trail.
- Visual impairment: observe through hearing and touch (sounds, bark, leaves) with a partner guide.
- Lower fitness: easy pace and frequent stops; the group waits.
Learning goals
- Enjoy physical activity outdoors.
- Observe and record features of the environment.
- Build environmental awareness and respect for nature.
Equipment for a class of 25
- field notebooks: 6
- pencils: 6
Teacher tip
Walk the route beforehand and make sure field trip permissions are in place; a whistle for regrouping saves shouting and scares.
