Long Rope Turners: Keep the Loop Round
A lesson for the people turning the rope: learning to turn a long rope in a round, steady loop at the same speed as the partner. Without good turners, nobody gets to jump.
PhaseMain activitie
Duration20 min
Ages12–16
SpaceOutdoor yard
EquipmentLong jump ropes
IntensityLow
How to play
- No rope, partners five meters apart: big arm circles from the shoulder, copying the partner opposite (3 min).
- With the rope and no jumper: find a steady slap on the ground, the same "clack" every time (5 min).
- With a jumper calling "Faster!" or "Slower!": turners adjust without losing the round shape (6 min).
- Speed changes on the teacher's signal and turning with the non-dominant hand (6 min).
Rules
- Turning elbow close to the body, circle from the shoulder.
- The rope brushes the ground but hits nobody: the jumper only enters when the turners say "Ready."
- Feet set, shoulder-width apart.
- Switch roles every three minutes: everyone turns.
Variations
Easier
Turning with no jumper, slow speed.
Standard
Turning for a jumper with speed changes.
Harder
Turning with the non-dominant hand for one minute with no jumper misses.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: turn from the chair with the rope end wrapped in foam or tape for an easier grip.
- Shoulder injury: turn with the other arm or act as jumper or counter.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the jumper asks for faster or slower with agreed hand signals.
Learning goals
- Turn a long rope with a steady loop.
- Adjust speed in sync with a partner.
- See the turner's role as key to the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long jump ropes: 5
Teacher tip
The most common error is turning from the wrist, which flattens the rope and catches jumpers. Ask them to "draw a big circle in the air" and to watch their partner, not the rope.
