Long Rope Shapes: Drawing Together in Space
Groups of 6 hold a long rope and turn it into shapes that change form, level, and location, building a short visual story of four images linked by transitions. Students work on wordless cooperation, spatial awareness, and composing with objects.
How to play
- Groups of 6 with a rope about 25 feet long tied into a loop. On your signal they silently form a circle, a square, a triangle, and a straight line without letting go (4 minutes).
- Levels: hold the same shape with the rope at floor level, at waist height, and overhead, changing over 8 counts (3 minutes).
- Traveling shapes: the group travels 10 yards while holding the shape and turns 90 degrees without distorting it (3 minutes).
- Each group picks a theme (the tide, a growing city, a boat in a storm) and creates four shapes linked by 8-count transitions (6 minutes).
- Rehearse with music, keeping the rope taut at all times and making every shape change look clean (3 minutes).
- Showing: each group performs its story and the others guess the theme (3 minutes).
Rules
- Never wrap the rope around the neck, wrists, or waist.
- Nobody suddenly lets go of the rope while it's taut.
- Traveling shapes are done walking, not running.
Variations
Easier
Work only on fixed geometric shapes with no traveling and no theme.
Standard
A four-shape story with levels, traveling, and 8-count transitions.
Harder
Remove visual communication: the group does the transitions with eyes closed, guided only by rope tension.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student in a wheelchair holds the rope at a fixed corner and the shape is built around them.
- Visual impairment: rope tension tells the student the shape; describe the shapes out loud at the start.
- Shy students: the shared object puts the focus on the shape rather than the person.
Learning goals
- Cooperate without words to build shapes with a shared object.
- Control the group's tension, level, and travel through space.
- Compose a visual sequence with a story in mind.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 4
- music
- portable speaker: 1
Teacher tip
If it gets noisy, ask for total silence from the start: listening through the rope is the key. Take a photo of each shape so the group can see how it looks from outside.
