Long Rope Jump and Catch
A long rope progression where the jumper also has to bounce, catch, and return a soft ball to a partner standing outside the rope. It builds whole-body coordination, eye-hand coordination on the move, and cooperation.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5 with a 13-16 ft long rope and a soft ball: two turn, one jumps, one passes from about 6 feet outside, and the fifth counts. Rotate every 2 minutes (2 min).
- Step 1: jump 10 times hugging the ball to your chest, then raising it overhead on every jump (3 min).
- Step 2: bounce the ball while the rope is overhead and catch it before the rope comes back down. Count consecutive bounces (4 min).
- Step 3: the passer tosses a soft underhand pass while the rope is overhead; the jumper catches, jumps, and passes back on the next turn. Each complete pass is a point (5 min).
- Challenge: most passes in a row in one minute, rotating jumpers every 5 passes; two tries. To finish, each group explains the best moment in the turn to pass (4 min).
Rules
- Pass only when the rope is overhead, softly, at chest height.
- If the ball drops, get it once the rope stops, never by stepping in while it turns.
- Turners let go if someone gets tangled.
Variations
Easier
Swing the rope side to side without going overhead; the jumper just holds and releases the ball.
Standard
Complete all three steps: holding, bouncing between jumps, and passing with a partner.
Harder
Put a passer on each side: catch from one and pass to the other without stopping.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be the passer, a key role for the rhythm, or turn a rope tied to a post.
- Blind or low vision: use a ball with a bell, a slow turn, and a voice cue before each pass.
- Fitness level: strong movers catch one-handed; students who struggle stay on step 1 or 2.
Learning goals
- Keep a jumping rhythm while handling a ball.
- Time passes and catches to the rope's turn.
- Work with the group to reach a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 5
- soft balls: 5
Teacher tip
It works best with turners who can already turn slowly and steadily. If a group gets frustrated, step back: bouncing between jumps is already a big win at this age.
