Long Rope Around the Clock
A classic long rope game where the group works its way around the clock: the first jumper takes one jump, the second takes two, and so on up to twelve, without the rope turning empty more than once. Students practice rhythm, running in and out of the rope, and teamwork.
How to play
- Make groups of 6 with one long rope: two turners and four jumpers lined up at one end; turners switch every time the group finishes or restarts the clock (1 min).
- Entry practice: each jumper runs in as the rope comes down in front of them, takes one jump, and runs out the opposite side; repeat until everyone enters confidently (3 min).
- Start the clock: the first jumper runs in and takes 1 jump (one o'clock), runs out, and the next runs in for 2 jumps (two o'clock), and so on, with the whole group calling out the hour (3 min).
- If someone steps on the rope or leaves an empty turn, the group restarts at one o'clock and two new turners take over (3 min).
- Each group records the highest hour reached in 5 minutes; groups that reach twelve go back around the clock from twelve down to one (5 min).
Rules
- Only one empty turn is allowed between one jumper's exit and the next entry.
- Always enter on the same side and exit on the opposite side to avoid collisions.
- Turners hold the rope by the ends at hip height, and groups stay well apart.
- The group cheers each other on and never blames whoever misses.
Variations
Easier
Allow one extra empty turn, and after a miss the group continues from the last hour reached.
Standard
Play from one to twelve o'clock and restart at one after any miss.
Harder
Enter through the front door, with the rope turning toward the jumper, or switch jumping feet on every hour.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student turns from a chair and keeps the hour count out loud for the whole group.
- Hearing impairment: the free hand of a turner signals the moment to enter, and the hour is shown with fingers.
- Fitness level: students who struggle may start with the rope on the ground and begin jumping from inside.
Learning goals
- Run in and out of a long rope at the right moment.
- Keep a steady jumping rhythm while counting out loud.
- Work together toward a shared goal without pointing out mistakes.

Teacher tip
Saying now as the rope passes the jumper's face really helps timing. If a group keeps getting stuck on the same hour, change the order of the line.
