Living Net: Mini-Volleyball with a Moving Rope
A 3v3 mini-volleyball game where the net is a rope held by two classmates who raise or lower it during the rally. Students must adjust the height and arc of every send and keep an eye on the net, and everyone rotates through the net role.
How to play
- Courts about 26×16 feet marked with cones; groups of 8: two teams of 3 and two students holding a long rope across the middle, one on each sideline (2 min).
- Rope holders keep the rope between shoulder height and arms straight overhead; they may raise or lower it slowly during the rally.
- Serve with a two-hand toss from the back; each team gets up to 3 touches, and the first touch may be caught.
- A point is scored if the ball lands on the other side; if it hits the rope or goes under, the other team scores.
- Every 3 min, the two rope holders join the game and two players, one from each team, become the net (6 rotations, 18 min).
- Each team keeps its own score, and at the end the class talks about how they adjusted their send when the rope went up.
Rules
- Move the rope slowly and always with both hands; never yank it or let go suddenly.
- Rope holders can't raise or lower the rope when the ball is about to cross.
- No one gets within 3 feet of the rope, so no one gets tangled.
- Rope holders don't hit the ball: if it comes to them, they let it drop.
Variations
Easier
The rope only moves between rallies, and every touch may be caught.
Standard
The rope moves slowly during the rally, 3 touches, and a catch on the first one.
Harder
No catches, and rope holders may also take a step toward one side to change the court sizes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: holds the rope seated on a bench, or plays with the rope fixed at shoulder height in their zone.
- Visual impairment: tie brightly colored ribbons on the rope, and holders call "Up" or "Down."
- Lower skill level: their team plays with a balloon instead of a light ball.
Learning goals
- Adjust the arc of the send to a net height that keeps changing.
- Track the ball, the net, and the other team at the same time.
- Respect each classmate's role and the rope safety rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- light balls: 3
- long ropes: 3
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Make sure rope holders understand the rope moves slowly: they control the height, they aren't defenders. Tie ribbons on the rope so it's easier to see.
