Linked Back Four: Shifting with the Ball
Four defenders learn zonal defending by moving as a unit: first linked by 8-meter ropes at walking pace, then free against five attackers who move the ball from side to side. Students work on shifting across, covering and communication within the line.
How to play
- Explain the principles of zonal defending: the ball is the reference, the nearest defender presses and the rest cover by tucking inside (3 min).
- With 8-meter ropes between defenders and walking, the line shifts with the ball as four stationary attackers pass along the edge of the box (5 min).
- Without ropes, at a jog: the attackers pass faster and the line must keep about 8 m between defenders (5 min).
- 5v4 game toward a goal with a goalkeeper: defenders earn a point by winning the ball and carrying it across a cone line at midfield (9 min).
- Switch roles and debrief: who gave the orders and which words worked? (3 min).
Rules
- With ropes, walk only; let go immediately if anyone trips.
- Defenders never tackle from behind or slide.
- Ropes are collected and taken off the field before the game phase.
- The right center back gives the line's orders out loud.
Variations
Easier
A back three against four attackers who only pass.
Standard
A back four with ropes and then without ropes against five attackers.
Harder
Add an attacker who makes runs in behind, and the line must decide when to step up to catch them offside.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: acts as the line's coach and gives orders from behind the goal.
- Partial visual impairment: keeps the rope in every phase to feel teammates moving.
- Hearing impairment: agree on hand signals for step up, drop and shift.
Learning goals
- Understand the principles of zonal defending.
- Shift and cover while keeping the distance between defenders.
- Communicate with clear orders within the line.
Equipment for a class of 25

- cones: 20
- balls: 6

Teacher tip
Ropes make visible what you cannot see in a real game: if they go tight or drag, the line has broken. Use them at walking pace only.
