Linear Salsa: Cross Body Lead with Switchable Roles
Students learn the core figure of linear salsa (LA or New York style): the cross body lead, where the leader opens a lane and the follower walks through it. Everyone practices both roles to understand how the other person feels and how a light connection carries the communication.
How to play
- Mark several lanes with cones and explain that linear salsa is danced along a line, not in a circle like casino (2 min).
- Solo forward-and-back basic, counting 1-2-3, 5-6-7 with a pause on 4 and 8 (5 min).
- Cross body lead without a partner: the leader makes a quarter turn on 1-2-3 to open the lane while the follower walks straight ahead (5 min).
- In freely chosen pairs with a soft hand hold: four short songs, switching leader and follower roles every song (10 min).
- Each pair talks about which hand signal was clearest and what changed when they danced the other role (3 min).
Rules
- The connection is light: the leader's hand suggests, it never pulls or pushes.
- Everyone dances both roles; nobody assigns roles by gender.
- Changing partners is voluntary, and you always ask before starting.
- Each pair stays in its own lane so it doesn't run into the next one.
Variations
Easier
Practice with no hold, palms facing each other a couple of inches apart.
Standard
Partner cross body lead, switching roles every song.
Harder
Add a follower's inside turn within the cross body lead.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: dances with a continuous two-hand hold while the partner says the count out loud.
- Shoulder injury: connects with the elbow bent and the hand at waist height, with no overhead turns.
- Social anxiety or autism: may do everything with a trusted partner or solo in front of a mirror.
Learning goals
- Tell linear salsa apart from casino by how it uses space.
- Send and receive movement cues through a light connection.
- Understand both partner dance roles regardless of gender.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speaker: 1
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
If a pair loses the timing, have them reset on the pause on 4. Use salsa tracks around 160–170 BPM.
