Line Dance Basics: Grapevine, Jazz Box, Turn
Students learn the basic line dance steps (grapevine, jazz box, step-touch, and quarter turn) and dance a simple routine that faces a new wall each time through. Students work on sequence memory, spatial orientation, and rhythm.
How to play
- Arrange students in rows, all facing the front wall, an arm's length apart. Spend 1 minute explaining that everyone does the same steps and the sequence repeats.
- Grapevine (3 minutes): step right, cross behind, step right, and close with a clap; repeat to the left.
- Jazz box (3 minutes): cross the right foot in front, left foot back, right foot to the side, and close, drawing a square on the floor.
- Step-touch and quarter turn (3 minutes): step forward and touch, step back and touch, and on the last count turn 90 degrees to the left.
- Full 32-count routine with music (7 minutes): grapevine right, grapevine left, jazz box, and step-touch with a turn; after each round, everyone faces a new wall.
- Final 3-minute challenge: dance the whole song without the teacher leading; anyone who gets lost rejoins at the next grapevine.
Rules
- Everyone turns the same way to avoid collisions.
- Keep an arm's length from everyone.
- Counting quietly is fine, but no shouting or distracting others.
- If you make a mistake, keep dancing and rejoin at the start of the next sequence.
Variations
Easier
A routine with no turn, always facing the same wall.
Standard
A 32-count routine with a quarter turn and wall change.
Harder
Add a full turn in the grapevine and a second, faster song.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adapt the steps with wheelchair moves or with arms tracing the jazz box and grapevine.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher faces the class holding large cards for each step.
- Lower skill: stand in the middle of the class so there are classmates in front at every wall.
Learning goals
- Perform basic line dance steps on the beat.
- Memorize a 32-count sequence and repeat it without a leader.
- Stay oriented in space after each wall change.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music
- speakers: 1
Teacher tip
Pick a song around 110-120 beats per minute. After each turn, move to the new front so students always have you as a reference.
