Lindy Hop Jam Circle: Couples Step In by Choice
After reviewing the swing out and six-count steps, the class forms a jam circle: couples who want to step into the middle for a few bars while everyone else cheers and keeps the beat. Students work on improvisation, stage presence and group support, just like in the Harlem ballrooms.
How to play
- Review in pairs with roles of their choice: six-count basic, rock step and swing out at a slow tempo (6 min).
- Teach three improvisation tools: freezing on a break, adding a kick and switching roles mid-phrase (5 min).
- Form a big circle: the rest of the class triple-steps in place and claps on 2 and 4 (2 min).
- Jam: any couple who wants to steps into the middle for two eight-count phrases, then steps out to make room for the next (9 min).
- Reflection: which tools worked and how the circle's support felt (3 min).
Rules
- Stepping into the middle is optional; nobody is pushed in or pointed out to leave.
- No lifts, jumps or aerials.
- The circle only cheers in a positive way: no mocking.
- Each couple chooses its roles and can switch them anytime.
Variations
Easier
Only the six-count basic in the middle, with two or three couples at a time.
Standard
Voluntary couple entries for two phrases using at least one improvisation tool.
Harder
Each couple includes a role switch and a break timed to the music.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: joins the jam in the wheelchair with a partner, with hand-led turns and curved pathways.
- Visual impairment: dances with a two-hand connection and gets a verbal heads-up when the turn starts and ends.
- Shyness or anxiety: may step in alongside other couples or take part only from the circle, keeping the beat.
Learning goals
- Improvise with a partner within the phrase structure of swing music.
- Build a group atmosphere that encourages without judging.
- Learn about the African American roots of lindy hop and its social context.

Teacher tip
Use swing music at 120–140 BPM. Step into the middle first yourself: it breaks the ice and takes the pressure off.
