Lightning League: 3 vs. 3 Tag Rugby on Mini-Fields
Short 3 vs. 3 tag rugby games on five mini-fields at once, with ladder-style rotation by result. Everyone gets lots of touches and makes constant decisions.
How to play
- Set up five 15 × 10 m fields and make teams of three (4 min).
- Round 1: a three-minute game; winners move up a field, losers move down (4 min).
- Rounds 2 and 3 with the same rotation (8 min).
- Round 4: teams choose a special rule, such as a double try after three passes (4 min).
- Final round and a handshake with every opponent of the day (5 min).
Rules
- After a tag, pass within three seconds; after two tags in a row, possession changes.
- Forward pass or dropped ball: turnover at that spot.
- Tie: rock, paper, scissors decides.
- Each team referees its own game; any doubt means replay.
Variations
Easier
Wider fields and two defenders.
Standard
3 vs. 3 on 15 × 10 m fields.
Harder
Narrower fields and a pass required before scoring.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: their field is the widest and teams there play at a brisk walk.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the end of each round is signaled with a tall cone held up.
- Students frustrated by losing: the ladder is short and there's always a rematch next round.
Learning goals
- Decide quickly between running and passing.
- Self-referee with fair play.
- Keep participation high in small spaces.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tag belts: 30
- rugby balls: 5
- pinnies: 30
- cones: 30
Teacher tip
Number the fields with a tall cone and put field 1 near you. Common mistake: long arguments; the replay rule shuts them down.
