Light Dumbbell Conditioning Class by Music Tracks
A group conditioning class where each song targets one muscle group and the tempo sets the rep cadence with light dumbbells. Students build muscular endurance and postural control and learn how a music-based group fitness class is structured.
How to play
- Arrange students in staggered rows with a mat and two 2-4 lb dumbbells; the teacher stands up front where everyone can see (2 min).
- Track 1, warm-up (4 min): unweighted moves on the beat and an explanation of cadence: "2 down, 2 up" and "1 and 1."
- Track 2, legs (4 min): squats and lunges with dumbbells at the sides.
- Track 3, chest and triceps (4 min): floor press and overhead extension.
- Track 4, back and shoulders (4 min): bent-over rows and lateral raises.
- Track 5, core (4 min): light Russian twists and forearm planks.
- Track 6 and wrap-up (6 min): stretch the muscles worked and reflect on which track was hardest.
Rules
- Always set dumbbells down on the floor; never drop them.
- Keep a neutral spine during rows and squats.
- Use a weight that lets you finish the track with good form.
- Keep an arm's length between students.
Variations
Easier
Do the tracks with no weights or with small water bottles.
Standard
Six tracks with 2-4 lb dumbbells and varied cadences.
Harder
Mix slow-tempo blocks with quick half-rep pulses at the end of each track.
Adaptations
- For limited mobility, replace leg tracks with seated arm work.
- For students who are deaf or hard of hearing, the teacher exaggerates the moves and counts with fingers.
- Advanced students use 6 lb dumbbells on the leg tracks.
Learning goals
- Perform strength exercises to a musical cadence.
- Hold correct posture through long sets.
- Understand how a group conditioning class is structured.
Equipment for a class of 25
- dumbbells: 50
- yoga mats: 25
- portable speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Build the playlist at 120-130 beats per minute, ideally with instrumental tracks. Coach the group by naming what students are doing well.
