Left-Hand, Right-Hand Freeze Tag
A freeze tag game where taggers may only tag, and teammates may only free, with the hand on the side the teacher calls, and the call changes without stopping play. Students practice laterality under time pressure, reacting to rule changes and dodging.
How to play
- Choose 4 taggers in pinnies; everyone else spreads out over half the court (1 min).
- Rule: on "Right!", tag only with the right hand on a classmate's right shoulder or right side of the back; on "Left!", the opposite (1 min).
- Tagged players freeze with the called-side hand raised and are freed when a teammate high-fives it with the same hand (4 min).
- Switch sides every 20 to 30 seconds without stopping; a wrong-hand tag doesn't count.
- Change taggers every 2 minutes, handing the pinnie to someone who hasn't had it (6 min, three rounds).
- "Crossover!" round: tag with the right hand on the left shoulder or vice versa (3 min).
Rules
- Tag gently with an open hand on the shoulder or back, never the face and no pushing.
- Tagging or freeing with the wrong hand doesn't count.
- Stay inside the half-court boundaries.
Variations
Easier
One side for the whole round and 3 taggers.
Standard
4 taggers with a side switch every 20 to 30 seconds.
Harder
"Crossover!" from the start, and freeing uses the hand opposite the call.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: students using wheelchairs tag or free with the called hand and are safe for 5 seconds after freeing someone.
- Hearing impairment: besides shouting, raise a pinnie with the arm on the side in play.
- Fitness level: the fastest taggers may only speed-walk; tired students rest 10 seconds in a safe zone.
Learning goals
- Use the right or left hand in response to a changing signal.
- React quickly to rule changes.
- Dodge and change direction while respecting others.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pinnies: 4
Teacher tip
When you switch sides, shout it and raise your arm, because many kids miss it mid-run. If someone stays frozen too long, call "Everyone's free!" and restart.
