Latin Dance Cardio Blocks
A dance cardio class where the teacher teaches basic merengue, cumbia, salsa and reggaeton steps and links them into cardio blocks with higher and lower intensity intervals. Students build aerobic endurance, rhythm and group self-expression.
How to play
- Arrange students in staggered rows facing the teacher; explain that each rhythm gets a five-minute block (1 min).
- Merengue block (5 min): march in place with hips, side step and turn; moderate intensity.
- Cumbia block (5 min): alternating back step with arms and traveling in a circle.
- Salsa block (5 min): forward-back basic and cross step; bump up intensity with small hops on the chorus.
- Reggaeton block (5 min): bounce step and a four-move combo over eight counts.
- Wrap-up (4 min): repeat one combo from each rhythm at lower intensity and discuss which one raised the heart rate most.
Rules
- Everyone dances in their own space, an arm's length apart.
- Turn on the balls of the feet to protect the knees.
- Respect every way of dancing: no teasing.
- If you get tired, walk the step without stopping.
Variations
Easier
Use only two steps per rhythm and walk them.
Standard
Four five-minute blocks with intensity changes.
Harder
Cut the instruction and link all four rhythms nonstop into a 12-minute routine.
Adaptations
- For limited mobility, dance with the trunk and arms from a chair on the same counts.
- For shy students, rotate row positions so nobody is always in front.
- Fitter students add hops and overhead arms.
Learning goals
- Sustain continuous aerobic activity to music.
- Reproduce basic steps from several Latin rhythms.
- Enjoy group self-expression without feeling self-conscious.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- portable speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Prepare the music in advance and avoid inappropriate lyrics. Teach each step without music at half speed first, then add it to the song.
