Lab Breakout: Five-Room Movement Escape
Teams move through five rooms, each with a movement challenge; when they beat it, they earn a piece of the final password to escape the lab. Every member has a role that rotates.
How to play
- Story briefing, 5 teams of 5 or 6, and roles handed out with pinnies: timekeeper, instruction reader, spokesperson, safety officer, and doers (4 min).
- Rounds 1 and 2 (6 min per room). Rooms: lasers (cross ropes at different heights without touching), transport (carry 5 balls without hands), hoop code (repeat a jumping pattern only the reader has seen), stick bridge (roll a ball 10 meters along two sticks), and human lock (make the shape in the envelope with your bodies) (12 min).
- Rounds 3 and 4, switching rooms and rotating roles (12 min).
- Round 5 and decoding: the team orders its five pieces, and the spokesperson tells the teacher the password (8 min).
- Wrap-up: each team shares which room was hardest and which role helped most (4 min).
Rules
- A room's envelope opens only after the challenge is done in front of the teacher or the safety officer.
- If time runs out in a room, the team gets a hint and an easier version; nobody leaves without a piece.
- In the laser room, no jumping over ropes higher than 16 inches; go under.
- Roles rotate every room.
Variations
Easier
Easy versions of each challenge and a five-letter password.
Standard
Standard challenges, password put in order at the end.
Harder
Each piece is a riddle that must be solved before moving to the next room.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: the laser room has a low lane with ropes at armrest height, and they can keep reader or spokesperson as a fixed role if they prefer.
- Hearing impairment: room instructions written out with a drawing inside each envelope.
- Students with autism or anxiety: get a map with the room order and the story in writing before starting.
Learning goals
- Solve linked movement challenges with a shared goal.
- Take on and rotate roles within the team.
- Handle time and pressure in a positive way.
