La Calva: Hit It in the Air, No Bounce Allowed
La calva is a traditional game from Castile and León and parts of Madrid: you throw a cylinder, the marro, to hit an angled wooden piece, the calva, which must be struck directly without the marro bouncing first. We adapt it with cones and beanbags to work on throwing accuracy at a distance.
How to play
- Explain the game: the calva, the marro and the golden rule of hitting without a bounce. Six lanes, each with a cone as the calva and a rope on the ground as the throwing line (4 min).
- Free throws in groups of four from 6 meters: each player throws two beanbags and watches the flight (5 min).
- Official-rules round: only a hit in the air counts; if the beanbag bounces first, the throw is void even if it knocks the cone over (6 min).
- Distance ladder: a hit moves you back one step, a miss keeps you there; play in waves on the signal (6 min).
- Team totals and a quick talk about which technique worked best (4 min).
Rules
- Throw and retrieve in waves: nobody crosses the line until the signal.
- Each lane has a judge who calls any bounce.
- Throw underhand or sidearm, never overhead.
- Lanes are parallel with at least 3 meters between them.
Variations
Easier
4-meter distance, and one bounce is allowed once per round.
Standard
6-meter distance, air hits only.
Harder
Smaller cone at 10 meters, half the throws with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throw from the wheelchair from a closer line.
- Visual impairment: the judge taps the cone with a stick for orientation and calls «short», «long», «right» or «left».
- Shoulder injury: throw with the other hand, or roll with separate scoring.
Learning goals
- Control the flight path of a throw.
- Referee a key rule fairly.
- Learn a traditional game from Castile and León.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 18
- beanbags: 24
- ropes: 6
Teacher tip
The real calva is an angled piece of wood and the marro a stone or iron cylinder; show a photo. The typical mistake is rolling the throw, so stress the no-bounce rule.
