La Calva: Castilian Fly-Hit Toss
A traditional game from Castile and León and Extremadura: players throw a stone, the marro, to strike the calva, an angled block of wood, before the stone touches the ground. Students practice accurate throwing and judging distance.
How to play
- Share the background (2 min): villagers threw a stone at a log cut at an angle; today the calva is a tall cone and the stone is a bean bag.
- Make 6 groups of 4 or 5, each with its own calva and a chalk line 6 m (20 ft) away; lanes 3 m (10 ft) apart (3 min).
- Taking turns, each player throws 2 bean bags underhand. It only counts as a calva if the bag hits the cone on the fly.
- Clean hit: 2 points; bag within a hand's length of the cone: 1 point. One group member judges and keeps score.
- After 4 rounds (8 min), the top two in each lane move to the next lane and the line moves back to 8 m (26 ft) for 8 minutes.
- Team finale (4 min): each group totals its hits and tries to beat its first score.
Rules
- Nobody collects bean bags until the 'collect' whistle.
- Throw underhand and only when the lane is clear.
- A bag that bounces before hitting the cone is not a calva.
- The judge settles disputes, and the role rotates every round.
Variations
Easier
Throw from 4 m (13 ft) and accept a bag that bounces once.
Standard
Throw from 6 m (20 ft) and score only direct hits on the fly.
Harder
Throw from 9 m (30 ft) and use a bottle lying on its side as the calva.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student throws seated from 4 m (13 ft) while a partner hands over the bags.
- Visual impairment: a partner claps next to the calva and calls out each result.
- Skill level: strong throwers use the non-dominant hand; students who struggle step one pace closer.
Learning goals
- Adjust throwing force and trajectory to a set distance.
- Learn the origin and rules of a traditional Castilian game.
- Respect turns and accept calls made by classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bean bags: 48
- cones: 6
- chalk: 3
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is a high lob that lands short: ask for a flatter throw with the arm pointing at the cone. If grandparents played calva growing up, invite them in to tell the story.
