Knotted Rope Climb: The Foot Lock
A step-by-step progression for climbing a hanging rope with the foot lock, which lets the legs do the lifting and the arms rest. Students build grip strength, arm-leg coordination, and a controlled hand-under-hand descent.
How to play
- Groups of 4 per rope (6 ropes), with two mats underneath; mark an 8-foot limit with masking tape. Students waiting sit 6 feet away.
- Demonstration (3 min): the right foot steps on the rope across the top of the left foot and pinches it; stand up tall on the lock, slide the hands up, and repeat.
- Level 1 (4 min): starting seated at the base, each student hangs from the arms and practices the lock without lifting more than a hand's width off the floor; 3 tries per turn.
- Level 2 (5 min): climb to the second knot with the lock and hold for 3 seconds using only the lock and one hand.
- Level 3 (6 min): climb to the tape, touch it, and come down hand under hand without sliding, opening and closing the lock at each knot.
- On every turn, a partner steadies the bottom of the rope so it doesn't swing and counts the knots.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each student writes down their level; ask which body part did the most work.
Rules
- Nobody climbs higher than the tape.
- Safety: always come down hand under hand; sliding burns the hands and is not allowed.
- One climber per rope, and nobody walks under someone who is hanging.
- If you get tired, stop at a knot, lock your feet, and climb down slowly.
Variations
Easier
Climb only to the first knot and back, using stacked mats as a starting step.
Standard
Three levels with the foot lock up to an 8-foot limit.
Harder
Climb to the tape with the lock and come down using only the arms, legs held in an L.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated rope pulls on the floor, hand over hand, drawing themselves toward the partner holding the rope.
- Shy students or fear of heights: they choose their own ceiling with a clothespin and raise it one knot each class.
- Lower strength: stay on level 1, alternating hanging and letting go with the feet supporting.
Learning goals
- Use the foot lock to hold the body on the rope.
- Coordinate arms and legs to climb with less effort.
- Perform a safe, controlled hand-under-hand descent.
Equipment for a class of 25
- climbing ropes: 6
- mats: 12
- masking tape: 1
Teacher tip
Classic mistake: climbing with arms only; nobody moves up until the lock holds their weight. Check the rope anchors before class.
