Knot Job Stations
A four-station circuit where each knot is learned by doing the real job it's used for: tying around your waist, securing to a post, joining two ropes, and hanging a backpack. Students build basic knot-tying skills with a hands-on test for every knot.
How to play
- Set up 4 stations, each with a card showing step-by-step drawings, and form 4 groups of 6. Each student has a short 6-foot rope (2 min).
- Station 1, bowline: each student ties a fixed loop around their waist; the test is that a partner pulls gently and the loop doesn't tighten.
- Station 2, clove hitch: tie the rope to a pole held horizontally by two classmates, like tying a boat to a dock; the test is pulling without it sliding.
- Station 3, fisherman's knot: join two ropes, and two pairs pull in opposite directions at the same time without it coming apart.
- Station 4, two half hitches: hang a backpack from a pole resting on two chairs or the wall bars; it must hold for 10 seconds.
- Each station lasts 4 minutes. When a student passes the test, a partner signs their card; anyone who finishes early helps a groupmate.
Rules
- A partner checks every knot before the test.
- Pull tests are done gently, with no sudden jerks.
- When switching stations, untie all knots and leave the equipment as you found it.
Variations
Easier
Work only on the bowline and clove hitch, with photo cards for each step.
Standard
Four knots, each with a practical job and a partner's signature when passed.
Harder
Tie the knots with eyes closed or tie the bowline one-handed around the waist.
Adaptations
- Limited hand mobility: thick, colorful rope and help from a partner.
- Autism: numbered step cards and the same partner throughout.
- Early finishers act as station experts; students who struggle repeat their hardest station.
Learning goals
- Tie four basic outdoor knots.
- Connect each knot with how it's used outdoors.
- Check a knot's safety before using it.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ropes: 25
- poles: 4
- backpacks: 2
- cards: 29
Teacher tip
Have students face the card in the same direction as the drawing to cut down on backward knots. A two-colored rope makes explanations much easier.
