Knot Bingo: Teacher Calls the Job
The teacher calls out a camping or mountain situation and each pair has to decide which knot does the job, run for a rope, and tie it correctly. Students practice choosing the right knot for its use, tying it quickly, and checking each other's work.
How to play
- Review (4 min): in pairs, each with a 6-foot rope, review five knots: square knot, figure eight, bowline, clove hitch, and timber hitch.
- Each pair gets a 3x3 bingo card with the knot names repeated in different orders; the ropes sit in a hoop about 15 yards away.
- The teacher calls out a job, such as "tie a tent line to a tree" or "join two ropes of the same thickness," without naming the knot.
- The pair picks the knot, runs to the hoop, ties it within 45 seconds, and comes back; on the whistle everyone holds their knot up.
- If the knot is correct and dressed properly, the pair crosses out one square with that name; the teacher and two rotating inspectors check.
- The first pair to complete a line shouts "Bingo!"; play three cards (12 min), switching inspectors each round.
Rules
- A square only counts if the knot is tied correctly and the pair can explain what it is for.
- Run to the hoop, but tie standing still and never grab a rope from another pair.
- Ropes are never swung at anyone or wrapped around a neck; doing so costs the pair a turn.
Variations
Easier
Play with three knots and show a picture of the situation as well as calling it out.
Standard
Play with five knots, 45 seconds per knot, and 3x3 cards.
Harder
Add the fisherman's knot and the trucker's hitch and cut the time to 30 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stays next to the hoop while the partner runs; the student ties and checks the knot.
- Hearing impairment or autism: show each job on a picture card too and preview the visual stop signal.
- Skill level: advanced students act as inspectors with a checklist and coach anyone who misses a knot.
Learning goals
- Select the right knot for each outdoor situation.
- Tie five basic knots quickly and safely.
- Check classmates' work using clear, respectful criteria.

Teacher tip
Make the cards before class and be sure every called job has only one clear answer. The most common mistake is a crossed-wrong clove hitch, so demonstrate it on a pole.
