Kneeling Sumo Square
Kneeling in pairs inside a square made of four mats, each student tries to push their partner out using their hands on the shoulders and trunk. Playing on the knees keeps the fall risk very low while students work on pushing, base, and respect.
How to play
- Push four mats together into a square for every two pairs and explain that the outer edge is the out-of-bounds line (2 min).
- Opening bow: partners kneel face to face, bow to each other, and place their hands on each other's shoulders.
- When the teacher calls "go," they push for up to 20 seconds; you lose if a knee or hand touches outside the square or you fall onto your side.
- Play best of 3 while the other pair in the square judges, then switch (5 min).
- After each full round, winners rotate squares in one direction and the others in the opposite direction; play three rounds (8 min).
Rules
- Push only with palms on shoulders, arms, and trunk; never on the face.
- No rising off the knees or grabbing clothing.
- When the teacher calls "stop" or blows the whistle, everyone freezes and separates.
Variations
Easier
Make the square with six mats so it is harder to be pushed out.
Standard
Four-mat square and 20-second bouts.
Harder
Also allow pulling a partner's arms to break their balance.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays seated against a seated partner, winning by making the partner's back touch the mat.
- Autism: always use the same bow, start, and stop sequence and announce partner changes in advance.
- Fitness level: pair by weight and let the weaker student start closer to the center.
Learning goals
- Push in a controlled way while keeping a low base.
- Use a partner's loss of balance instead of brute strength.
- Follow the bow and the rules of combative games.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 24
Teacher tip
Teach students to spread their knees and drop their hips: anyone kneeling tall loses quickly. The opening and closing bow helps students understand they wrestle with a partner, not against an enemy.
