Kneeling Flag Duel
In pairs and kneeling on the mats, each student wears a flag tucked into the back of their waistband and tries to grab the other's flag without losing their own. Students work on moving on their knees, anticipation, and controlled contact.
How to play
- Lay out the mats in 2x2 m zones and give each student a flag tucked into the back of the waistband with about 12 inches hanging out (2 minutes).
- Knee movement practice: move forward, back, and turn without standing up, in mirror pairs (3 minutes).
- 30-second duel: on the signal, each tries to grab the other's flag. A grab scores one point; tuck it back in and keep going until time is up (5 minutes).
- Switch partners every two duels, rotating to the right around the mats (4 minutes).
- Group version: four students in a large square, everyone for themselves for 40 seconds; anyone who loses a flag tucks it back in and keeps playing (3 minutes).
- One-minute wrap-up: is it better to attack or wait for your opponent to make a mistake?
Rules
- Always stay on your knees: standing or squatting gives up a point.
- You may move the other player's arm away with your hand, but don't push the chest or face.
- Flags can't be tied, held, or hidden by lying on them.
- If heads bump or someone gets hit, stop and restart.
Variations
Easier
Play seated on the floor with a longer flag.
Standard
Kneeling, one flag each, and 30-second duels.
Harder
Each student wears two flags on the hips, and anyone who still has one at the end wins.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play from a seated position or wheelchair, with the flag on the shoulder, against a partner who is also seated.
- Visual impairment: attach a small bell or clip that makes noise to the flag, and the partner calls out their position.
- Lower fitness: 20-second duels with a turn off between them.
Learning goals
- Move effectively on the knees in a combative situation.
- Anticipate the opponent's actions to attack and defend.
- Control contact while following safety rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tatami mats: 24
- flags (ribbons): 26
Teacher tip
Ask students to wear knee pads or long pants if the mats are hard. The typical mistake is diving in headfirst, so keep reminding them to stay upright.
