King of the Beach Volleyball: Rotating Partners
A 2v2 beach volleyball format in which each student plays with a different partner every game and keeps an individual point total. Students learn to adjust to different partners, communicate on the court and use the basics of setting, passing and serving.
How to play
- Set up 3 courts about 40 x 20 ft with the net at 7 ft to 7 ft 3 in; make groups of 4 per court (if anyone is left over, form a group of 5 with a rotating rest).
- Each group gets a score card with 3 rounds: partners change every round so everyone plays with everyone (AB vs CD, AC vs BD, AD vs BC).
- 4-minute warm-up: partner setting and forearm passing across the net.
- Each round is a game to 11 (about 7 minutes), serving from the back line, with basic rules: three contacts per side and no touching the net.
- At the end of each game, each player records the points their team scored on the card; after 3 rounds, the player with the highest total is the group's King or Queen of the Beach.
- 3-minute close: the winners from each court share what they did to connect with different partners.
Rules
- Call for the ball out loud ('mine') before every contact.
- Do not touch the net or go under it into the other court.
- The group calls its own ball-handling faults honestly; if in doubt, replay the point.
Variations
Easier
Allow a catch-and-toss on the first contact and serve from mid-court.
Standard
2v2 to 11 points with three contacts and rotating partners.
Harder
Require the second contact to be a set and every attack to be a spike or placed shot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play sitting volleyball with a low net on one court using the same rotation system.
- Autism: show the student the round card before starting so they know who they will play with and in what order.
- Lower skill level: use a lighter ball and allow one bounce on their side.
Learning goals
- Apply setting, passing and serving fundamentals in real game play.
- Adjust communication and positioning to different partners.
- Track individual scoring within a cooperative partner game.
