Jump the Long Rope by Ear
In groups of five, students jump a long rope first while watching and then with eyes closed, timing their jumps to the slap of the rope on the floor and the turners' voices. Students develop rhythm, coordination, and confidence.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5 with one long rope: two turners and three jumpers taking turns. Keep groups at least 4 m (13 ft) apart.
- Listening (2 minutes): with eyes closed, the group claps each time the rope hits the floor to find the rhythm.
- Eyes open (3 minutes): the jumper starts inside with the rope resting behind their heels. Turners say "go!" and start; the jumper counts consecutive jumps.
- Eyes closed (5 minutes): same start, but after the third jump the jumper closes their eyes and keeps going by the sound of the slap. After a miss, they open their eyes and the next jumper goes. Turners rotate every 2 minutes.
- Final challenge (4 minutes): two jumpers holding hands, one with eyes open and one closed, try for 10 jumps in a row.
Rules
- Turn slowly and keep the rope brushing the floor, never at face height.
- With eyes closed, never run in: always start inside the rope.
- If the jumper steps on the rope, turners let go.
- The group cheers; nobody laughs at misses.
Variations
Easier
The rope only swings side to side, with no full turns.
Standard
Full turns with eyes-closed jumping from a start inside.
Harder
Run in while the rope is turning and close your eyes on the first jump.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student who uses a wheelchair turns the rope with the other end tied to a post or keeps the beat on a hand drum.
- Visual impairment: the student jumps without a blindfold using the rope slap as a cue and can teach others how to listen for it.
- Skill level: confident jumpers alternate two-foot and one-foot jumps with eyes closed.
Learning goals
- Time jumps to a rhythm heard by ear.
- Coordinate with the turners.
- Manage the uncertainty of jumping without seeing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 5
Teacher tip
Everything depends on the turners, so practice a slow, steady turn with them first. Slightly heavier ropes slap the floor louder.
