Jump Shot Takeoff: Hoop, Flight and Shot
A jump-shot progression where a hoop marks the takeoff foot before the 6 m line. Students learn to take off on the leg opposite the throwing arm, shoot at the top of the jump and land safely.
How to play
- Explain takeoff: right-handers take off on the left foot; place the hoop 1 m before the 6 m line (3 min).
- Jumps without a ball from the hoop, landing on both feet on a mat (4 min).
- With a ball, no goalie: three steps, takeoff in the hoop, shoot at the middle (6 min).
- With a goalie: aim for the low corners, shooting at the top of the jump (7 min).
- Choice: move the hoop back or receive a pass before the cycle (5 min).
Rules
- Land with both knees bent.
- Use soft balls when a classmate is in goal.
- One line per goal; the next shooter goes once the previous one lands.
- Nobody crosses in front of the goal.
Variations
Easier
Standing jump using the hoop as a marker.
Standard
Three steps, hoop takeoff and shot.
Harder
Catch a pass on the run and shoot past a passive defender.
Adaptations
- Knee or ankle injury: set shot from the hoop without jumping.
- Visually impaired students: three claps mark the rhythm and the hoop is replaced by a textured mat.
- Students nervous about jumping: low jump off a 10 cm step onto a mat.
Learning goals
- Take off on the leg opposite the throwing arm.
- Shoot at the top of the jump.
- Land safely.
Equipment for a class of 25
- handballs: 12
- hoops: 6
- goals: 2
- mats: 4
Teacher tip
Common mistakes are jumping straight up without moving forward or landing on a stiff leg. Mats are only needed the first few times; then land on the floor with bent knees.
