Jump Rope Running Relay
A team relay where students move forward jumping rope while running, with a different jump each round. It builds coordination between arm turns and running, rhythm, and short-burst endurance.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5 lined up behind a start cone, with a turn cone about 30 feet away. Everyone has a jump rope sized to their height: standing on the middle, the handles reach the armpits (2 min).
- Practice: run while jumping rope, stepping over with one foot and then the other on each turn, like jogging. Students who can't yet alternate three turns walking and three running (2 min).
- Round 1: run to the cone and back jumping rope; on return, slap the next teammate's hand, who leaves ready to go. Play two heats (4 min).
- Round 2: go out with two-foot jumps and come back running with the rope gathered in one hand (3 min).
- Round 3, accuracy: reach the cone in exactly 15 jumps; the team counts out loud and scores a point for everyone who nails it. Tally points and finish with an easy calf stretch (4 min).
Rules
- If the rope catches, stop, reset it, and continue from that spot.
- Keep at least 10 feet between lanes so ropes don't cross.
- Leave only after your teammate slaps your hand.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the distance to 20 feet and allow walking while turning the rope.
Standard
Three rounds at 30 feet: running jump, feet together, and accuracy relay.
Harder
Go out jumping rope backward or crossing arms every third jump.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: travel the course twirling a gymnastics ribbon at the side of the wheelchair.
- Blind or low vision: use a lane marked by a rope on the ground, with a partner clapping from the cone.
- Fitness level: the team splits distances so students who tire sooner go 20 feet and those with more stamina go 45.
Learning goals
- Coordinate turning the rope with running and two-foot jumps.
- Control the number of jumps to match rhythm to distance.
- Follow relay rules and encourage their team.
Equipment for a class of 25
- individual jump ropes: 25
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Check rope length before you start: almost every tangle comes from a badly sized rope. The accuracy round levels the field between the fastest and the most careful students.
